As I mentioned in a previous photo of the week Sara and I visited Stanley Park on a sunny day last month. For a change on this outing we headed for Beaver Lake instead of Lost Lagoon.
There was lots of bird activity around Beaver Lake with the usual sparrows plus a score of extremely bold Chestnut-backed Chickadees. While I’m familiar with the Black-capped Chickadees of Hawrelak Park, Edmonton eating from the hand, these Chestnut-backed Chickadees seemed much more insistent swooping in at the merest suggestion of an outstretched hand. In comparison the few Black-capped Chickadees present seemed much more skittish. Other notable sightings from around Beaver Lake included a White-throated Sparrow and a Sharp-shinned Hawk. There was also a late Autumn Meadowhawk that deftly avoid being photographed by landing directly on my face.
After circling the lake we headed west through the forest crossing the Stanely Park Causeway and ending up just south of Third Beach. As we headed back south along the seawall there was some great warm light as the sun set making for some beautiful photo opportunities. Our outing lasted 3 hours and in that time we covered 6.2 km and spotted 31 species of birds. For a full list see the kmz file below.
