I made a couple of trips out to Boundary Bay Dyke Trail in the past few weeks in search of the many reported raptors. On my first trip out to the Boundary Bay Dyke Trail I parked at the 64th Street access and walked to the east. I was able to see several Short-eared Owls, over a dozen Snowy Owls, and even more Northern Harriers. On my second trip I parked at the 72nd Street access and walked again to the east. The real striking thing about this trip was the sheer number of Bald Eagles roosting and soaring along the shore. Additional sightings of a Peregrine Falcon, a Rough-legged Hawk, and a several Red-tailed Hawks put a nice dent in the raptors on my year and BC lists.

On my first trip I saw a total of 16 species, while on my second trip I saw 22 species in total (for a complete list see the KMZ file below). While I did add to my year and BC lists, I missed out on a few potential lifers such as Barn Owl, Long-eared Owl and Dunlin. Hopefully I can see these reported species on a later trip out to the bay. You can see all my photos from the Boundary Bay Dyke Trail on Flickr, though I was hardly the only photographer out enjoying the owls.
