It has been more than a month since I moved my insect colonies to the Science Research Annex. The research annex has the benefit of ample room for all of my bugs but it is isolated from the rest of campus. Being isolated it is surrounded by much more nature and as a consequence has a good variety of arthropods occupying the building in addition to my colonies. Along with Woodlice and Carpenter Ants I see a variety of spiders. I happened to have my macro lens with me one day and I snapped some pictures.
I’ve found both juvenile and adult Zebra Jumpers around the annex. One particular spider had captured one of my escaped Delia Flies. We had some house guests about a month back and one of our house guests called me into our guest room/office complaining of a giant horrible spider. To my surprise it was one these adorable Zebra Jumpers (our house guest did not share this appreciation). I figure it must have come in on my backpack from the annex as I can’t figure any other way for a Jumper to get up to our 7th floor apartment.
I also found this male sheetweb spider prowling around the floor of the annex. I was able to use a sheet of white paper for quick improvised white background as suggested in one of Sean’s previous Cheapskate Tuesdays. I really like the pedipalps on this particular spider as they remind me of boxing gloves.
I need to acknowledge Lynette Schimming from BugGuide for her help with the IDs for these spiders. I’m going to try and take my macro lens to the annex more often so keep an eye out for some more annex arthropods. Since I’ll have my camera there I’ll also try to get some good shots of my study organisms.
